Chapter 6: Jude

By the end of the week I was completely sure Lena hadn’t taken my confession seriously. Every day I waited for her to come to my shop -- but she didn’t. I even approached the mage tower, trying to seek her out myself. But when I knocked on the door, nobody was home.

The weekend approached, and I made plans to go camping outside of the mage tower so I could somehow get a hold of Lena. But then on Friday the bell in my shop rang, and I saw her at the door.

Despite being the town wizard now and able to afford luxurious mage robes, Lena still wore the same dress as on the first day we had met. She looked stunning in the simple, button-up, beige gown. Her reddish brown hair was loose today, and she somehow looked younger. She couldn’t be older than in her early twenties, could she? Once again, I got reminded of how little I knew about this woman, and yet I was so inexplicably drawn to her.

“Hello, Jude,” Lena greeted me with her soft, sad smile.

“Why are you always so sad?” The question escaped my lips before I could control myself.

Lena grimaced, and her demeanor dropped a few degrees colder. She ignored my question, instead setting a package on my counter. “I came here to deliver protective amulets. You may give these out to the population for free. I can’t do it myself, as people are afraid of me now that I’m the town mage. But they will take them from you,” she explained. “They prevent people from falling ill with the most basic of illnesses like the cold, or pediculosis.”

I looked inside the bag to see wooden amulets like the one Lena had on her chest at all times. They were simple, but looked carved out of wood by hand in the shape of small crystals.

“And this…” I looked up at Lena as she spoke again -- she was… blushing an adorable shade of red, “...is for you. If you would accept it.” She opened her hand, and I saw a small, wooden bird in flight.

I made my way to her from behind the counter as quickly as I could. When I stepped in closer to her, I again realized our difference in height. Lena wasn’t a small woman, but I was a tall man. The top of her head came to my chin when I embraced her gently.

Lena made a faint sound of protest. “What are you doing?” she asked me, shocked. “I get that you are grateful, b-but this… is too much!”

Still she made no move to leave my arms, and I saw her ears had gotten red too. “Do you hate me?” I asked sheepishly.

“No!” She exclaimed. “But-!”

“Do you like me then?” I asked, pulling away enough to look into Lena’s eyes. She was indeed blushing furiously, and it made me happy that I was the one who made her react so.

“That’s not…!” Lena protested. “Fine,” she said when I continued to stare right into her eyes.
